I don't think Harvey ever quite reached the level of being a great artist in his own right, but he has his moments. His first few singles as Another Sunny Day are really fun bursts of energy that never take themselves too seriously. Even on the mopey songs, there's still a self-deprecating humor to them that prevents them from becoming maudlin (for example, in "Horseriding" he sings about how he "felt so good, because [he] didn't think of you for almost an hour". Unfortunately, after reaching his generally-accepted peak with "You Should All Be Murdered" (an upbeat jangle pop tune about all the kinds of people he hates), his work becomes a bit too self-serious for my taste.
Fortunately, Harvey makes up for it by being one of indiepop's best collaborators. He joined the Field Mice just in time to help out with their sorely underrated Skywriting, and stuck around to help them grow into a more mature sound on For Keeps. Afterwards, he joined Blueboy after their first single, helping them create their impeccable first two albums. I'm not sure what he's been up to since then, but I do know that for every broken heart, Harvey is there to help you wallow. Actually, in writing this I've convinced myself that I need to listen to London Weekend again, and you probably should too.
