Horsegirl started out as a fairly promising noisy indie rock group from what I remember, and as of 2025 has become one of the standard-bearers for the indiepop revival as recognized by the bigger music publications like Pitchfork and Bandcamp Daily. Phonetics On and On marks the shift into indiepop, and it's fairly lowkey, a bit lifeless but in a Young Marble Giants type of way maybe (i.e., as an aesthetic choice, not a criticism)? Sometimes I can almost hear what others hear in them, but other times their music feels so flat I slide right off it. I don't think many people would likely agree with this characterization, but they sort of sound like if a slowcore band tried to do indiepop?
