The Laughing Chimes started out as a duo of the Seurkamp brothers, though lately they've grown into a full band, coinciding with an evolution in sound that they consider to be "going goth". I'm not sure if I'd quite agree with that fully, but their latest album (as of the time of writing) is certainly darker-sounding than most of the jangle pop their contemporaries are making. It doesn't quite have the mystery in it of early R.E.M., but it seems to me that that's the sort of idea that they're going for.
