Of course, My Bloody Valentine are well-known for being shoegaze pioneers, with Loveless being pretty much universally considered the best example of the genre. But I've always been partial to their 1986-1988 discography, personally. In that stretch, you see them move out of Cramps-ish goth rock into a noisy C86 style that kinda fits in with like Jasmine Minks or Meat Whiplash, and then into a still somewhat noisy jangle pop, and finally into the beginnings of shoegaze. Former singer David Conway doesn't have the best reputation, but I really like him a lot on the two EPs where he starts singing in a normal voice. He works really well within that C86 context, even if Bilinda Butcher's vocals are technically better when she comes in! Plus, like, hearing "Paint a Rainbow" was one of the things that helped make me a total indiepop nut (before Talulah Gosh even!), so you've got him to blamethank for this site even existing!
