For a while now they've been the go-to Indie Snob band, but before that Neutral Milk Hotel were totally within the world of indiepop! Arguably, they're the best known of the loose collective of bands which would label themselves as "Elephant 6", all of which are at least vaguely psychedelic. In Neutral Milk Hotel's case, they make this really blown-out psychedelic noise folk that you'll probably either be obsessed with or totally hate.
