I kinda suffered a bit of an indiepop overload at the Big Pop Show last month, and when combined with having had an *extremely* busy April, the result is that I haven't really been keeping up with indiepop as much as is typical. Luckily, the "noise twee" of Secret Address is exactly the thing I needed to break out of my slump.
Musically, there's nothing particularly new going on here; the guitars are both fuzzy and jangly, the band rarely ever slows down (with the dreamy "aowtpiladf" being the sole exception here), and production values are non-existent. Melodically, I feel like these songs tend to either go in an early-mid-60s pop direction, or perhaps akin to Kleenex Girl Wonder? So like, not the most common places for melodic inspiration these days, but also by no means unheard of in that respect. All of these are qualities I appreciate when they're done well, but there's not really a shortage of bands who do all of this. Instead, Emerson's vocals are what make the band truly shine.
Emerson's falsetto vocals are a perfect complement to the exuberant crush pop of "Let's Go Exploring" and "Madison"; I'd even go as far as to say that those songs have some of my favorite vocal performances of the year so far! Similarly, they add a wonderfully contradictory dose of sweetness to "Salt the Earth"'s refrain of "salt the earth so nothing can grow there". The only song I'm not really sold on in that respect is "aowtpiladf"; though I have to admit that the crumbled Wall of Sound approach taken on that song doesn't really work for me in general.
Secret Address aren't really the type of band that's going to change your life, but they're certainly capable of brightening your dreary weekend. And as someone who hasn't had one in a while, I'm looking forward to one of those days promised by "Let's Go Exploring!", the "typical day, in a wonderful way, 'cause there's nothing to do". And in all likelihood, I'll probably be spending at least part of that day listening to A Typical Day.
