It's basically impossible to talk about Las Robertas without comparing them to Vivian Girls; they're not like carbon copies, but Las Robertas are probably about 90% of the way there. In particular, Cry Out Loud sounds almost as if it could have come out of the same recording sessions as Everything Goes Wrong: the same darker tone, the same copious amounts of reverb, and (unfortunately) the same reduced pop appeal. Their harmonies even sound the same as Cassie Ramone and Katy Goodman!
The main differences, at least to my ears, are in their solo vocals and in the way the guitar sounds. On their own, sometimes you'll catch the singers without their vocals being drowned in reverb, though I'm honestly not a huge fan of the unharmonized vocals on this one, which sound a bit too tentative. The guitar, on the other hand, is actually an improvement over the Vivian Girls formula! Instead of melting into everything else, it's mixed to stand out and, better yet, it's outright noisy! Of course, even noting the slight differences, I think it remains pretty much true that if you love Vivian Girls, you will almost certainly love Cry Out Loud, but if you've never been a fan, you should just pass this one by.
