I saw this band a couple weeks before the reissue came out, and they were selling it at the merch table, so I thought it would be very cool and very Serious Music Reviewer of me to review it ahead of the re-release date. Of course, I got home and immediately didn't feel like doing that, so instead here we are almost a month later.
Good Flying Birds are one of those bands that people are probably going to say sound like Guided By Voices, but in reality sound more like Kleenex Girl Wonder. The songs are all fine, with the singles coming closest to memorable, but no real standouts. For me, the main problem with Good Flying Birds is that their most memorable moments are the stupid interludes.
I mean, I've listened to this album several times now and the only things I can really remember about it are that stupid interlude that's just a drum break with monkey noises layered over it and the one song that breaks down into some guy saying "BRUH"! Of course, I can see other people who think those things are highlights, so maybe I'm just too old for the upcoming indiepop revival.
The biggest cause for optimism with regard to Good Flying Birds is that it sounds like pretty much everything here was recorded solo by the frontman. Live, they were a lot more fun than this (with no dumb interludes!), and I think recording as a full band will probably be good for them.
